Description
About the roleThe Underwriting Manager, Property (E&S) is responsible for leading and overseeing Property underwriting within an assigned Zone, with accountability for portfolio profitability, underwriting quality, talent development, and execution of strategic initiatives. This role has a strong strategic leadership component, including development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of underwriting strategies and guidelines across pricing, appetite, capacity deployment, marketing, staffing, renewals, and budgeting.
The Underwriting Manager provides referral authority for the most complex Property risks and partners closely with the Head of Property for the Zone to drive consistent underwriting discipline, profitable growth, and a strong, inclusive team culture. This role plays a key leadership position across Lexington and collaborates extensively with Distribution, other lines of business, and regional leadership.
How you will create an impact:
- Lead and manage all Property E&S underwriting within the assigned Zone, including referral decisions for the most complex and high-severity risks.
- Set underwriting direction and ensure consistent execution of underwriting strategies, guidelines, appetite, pricing, and portfolio management objectives.
- Oversee portfolio performance to achieve production goals while maintaining budgeted loss and expense ratios.
- Assign, manage, and prioritize the work of a team of Property underwriters; provide clear direction, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Serve as a senior technical and leadership resource, mentoring and developing underwriters with a focus on underwriting acumen, judgment, and career progression.
- Partner with Distribution, brokers, and internal stakeholders to develop and execute broker engagement, production, and portfolio strategies.
- Collaborate across AIG divisions and lines of business to support cross-selling opportunities and enterprise alignment.
- Monitor underwriting quality and adherence to guidelines through reports, audits, and ongoing oversight of the assigned book of business.
- Maintain a strong understanding of market conditions, emerging risks, and competitive dynamics to inform strategic decisions.
- Support planning and budgeting activities, including staffing, production targets, and expense management.
- Drive a culture of inclusion, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the Zone.
What we're looking for:
- 10+ years of Commercial Property E&S underwriting experience, including significant leadership or people-management responsibility.
- Expert technical Property underwriting knowledge across a broad spectrum of E&S risks, including primary, shared, layered, and excess placements.
- Proven ability to set underwriting direction, manage a balanced portfolio, and exercise sound judgment on complex risks.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership skills, including portfolio management, market segmentation, and business planning.
- Established relationships with brokers and distribution partners and a strong external market presence.
- Experience mentoring and developing underwriting talent, including succession planning and bench strength development.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to evaluate performance, manage competing priorities, and make timely decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative leadership style with the ability to partner effectively across regions, divisions, and functions.
- Commitment to building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing underwriting organization.

United States
AIG traces its roots back 90 years when an American entrepreneur named C.V. Starr founded AIG’s earliest predecessor company in Shanghai. What began as a small insurance business grew to become one of the world’s largest companies. By the end of 2007 AIG had assets of approximately $1 trillion, $110 billion in annual revenues, 74 million customers and 116,000 employees in 130 countries and jurisdictions. Yet, less than a year later, AIG found itself on the brink of failure and in need of emergency government assistance.
