Company History
Farm Bureau inaugurated service programs in the middle 1920s because other companies had neglected the farm market. The beginning of the Farm Bureau Insurance Services began in1925 when the leadership in Illinois set up a reinsurance company to reinsure county mutuals. In 1927, the Illinois Farm Bureau organized the first casualty company, Country Mutual Insurance Company. Then in 1928, Country Life was started. Now, a Farm Bureau Insurance Company serves all but six states. Through the years it was learned that the insurance program played a vital part in retention of Farm Bureau members.
Twenty years later, in 1947, the Idaho Farm Bureau led a campaign to organize another new casualty company, the Idaho Farm Insurance Company. The charter campaign was a success with 1,866 new policyholders and $100,000 in capital raised prior to the beginning of the company. Upon the completion of the charter in May of 1947, the company opened its doors as a stock company with the following objectives:
1. To serve a farm market where a void existed in insurance service.
2. To establish a service program which would aid in membership retention.
3. To offer quality insurance at the lowest possible cost.
In January, 1956, the corporate structure of the company was changed from a stock to a mutual company and the new name of Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Idaho was selected. Since then, affiliated companies--Farm Bureau Finance Company, Farm Insurance Brokerage Company, Farm Bureau Insurance Service Company, Western Community Investment Company, Western Community Insurance Company, and Western Farm Bureau Life--have been formed. The joining of Western Farm Bureau Life and Farm Bureau Life of Iowa shows that improved products and service continue to be important goals.
