American Community

Company Overview

Our mission is to be a secure and reliable market leader, providing products that empower consumers to make enlightened decisions leading to affordable, quality health care.

For nearly seven decades, American Community has provided protection for healthcare expenses. We offer a broad range of affordable traditional, HSA and other consumer-directed health insurance products for groups, individuals and families, along with a low-cost plan for short-term, temporary insurance.

Company History

American Community was founded in the spring of 1938 when the Michigan Hospital Benefit Association was created. Later, the name was changed to American Hospital-Medical Benefit. We pioneered health insurance and were the first company in Michigan to market Individual and Group hospital-surgical insurance plans.

Community Life Insurance Company was formed in 1947 to market life insurance. For a number of years, the American Medical and Community Life companion companies functioned as separate corporations operated by the same staff in the same location. In 1958 the life company changed its name to American Community Mutual Insurance Company, and in 1964 the two companies merged.

From its modest beginnings, American Community is now one of the top Individual health insurers in the business, and we are among the largest Group health insurers in the Detroit metropolitan area. Our marketing success in Michigan has enabled us to expand into other states. With our Home Office located in Livonia, Michigan, we market our product portfolio, which includes Individual and Group Managed Care, Group Major Medical, Short Term Medical, Health Savings Accounts, Dental, Group Vision and Weekly Income in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Texas (individual only) and Wisconsin (individual only).
