Directs the development of the implementation strategy and operational objectives for multiple product lines or segments, in accordance with the company's strategic plans.
This officer position provides leadership and oversight for underwriting excellence across casualty product lines, ensuring alignment with the company's long-term goals and profitability objectives. The position plays a critical role in executing corporate strategy and underwriting policy, driving innovation, operational efficiency, and market responsiveness. Through close collaboration with underwriting business units and individual product leaders, this leader ensures the application and execution of underwriting strategies that support sustainable growth, risk management and talent development through leadership of the Global Casualty Referral Unit.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
*This position is a hybrid office/remote position that can be based in any CNA Office location.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Drives implementation of strategic and operational objectives with significant impact on the short-term success of a casualty product lines or segments and moderate impact on the long-term success of the company.
2. Acts as senior level referral officer for exceptions to strategy, guidelines and authority for Casualty product lines.
3. In collaboration with Casualty product line leaders, develops and maintains underwriting guidelines and best practices, in accordance with federal and state regulations, to ensure the integrity of the product line or segment.
4. Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for Casualty product lines through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
5. Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the senior management team and develops plans to resolve issues.
6. Informs overall direction for underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for casualty product lines or segments.
7. Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control, Underwriting Shared Services, Actuarial, Claim, Operations, Technology and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
8. Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction.
9. Conducts research, analysis and development of insurance products. Assimilates trends in the industry, determines underwriting best practices and contributes to training/development curricula for a product line or segment.
10. May participate in rating bureau boards to keep abreast of industry, rating, coverage and benefit issues. Fosters relationships with insurance commissioners and regulators.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Mastery of underwriting discipline and knowledge in the insurance field and a broad understanding of the critical issues in other related areas.
2. Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships), teams and/or matrix environment.
3. Strong leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Senior level knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically a minimum of 12 years of related work experience, with seven years management experience.
3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.

I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $194,000 to $308,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
