The Senior Underwriting Consultant will analyze health benefit plan characteristics and assess risks as to frequency and potential severity of losses of clients. Will utilize established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies. . This Senior Underwriter consultant will represent and negotiate fees/premium rates and plan options to optimize cost-competitive health benefit plans. They will utilize pricing models to assist in the economic analysis of renewal customers.

This opening is in the ASO Renewal Underwriting team. ASO underwriting experience is desirable

You'll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Prepare financial experience rating calculations for self-funded customers and other ongoing financial reviews that directly align with client strategies
  • Validate request for renewals for accuracy including utilization and experience reporting
  • Conduct competitive analysis of all coverage lines and present financial and contractual findings to Senior and Executive levels
  • Promote the use of established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies
  • Support moderate to extreme existing complex customers that may be across multiple geographic areas
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and collaborate effectively with sales on potential alternatives and options for existing groups
  • Communicate effectively (written and verbal) rate changes on renewals from one year to the next
  • Work effectively in a team environment to support workloads as needed

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Finance, Business or related degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare underwriting for any variety of group products and funding: PPO, HMO, self-funded, ASO
  • Experience with self-funding underwriting methodologies including, medical administration fees, stop loss, and pharmacy pricing
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Underwriting experience with ASO products
  • Familiar with stop loss and pharmacy pricing and concepts
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $79,700 to $142,600. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $87,900 to $156,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
