SPECIFIC DUTIES: 

 A senior member of the Underwriting Unit helping to achieve the objectives of the company through the following duties:

  1. Manages and grows a profitable (Combined Ratio less than 100%) book of business based upon eligibility by review of loss analysis, exposure analysis, hazard group and reinsurance acceptability. (30%)
  2. Review Due Diligence reports, Loss control surveys, loss runs, timeliness of premium payments and take appropriate action when necessary. Collaborate with specialists such as premium auditors, claims adjusters and loss control engineers for risk assessment. (20%)
  3. Manages and delegates on a regular basis the activities of underwriting assistants including reaction time to compliance issues and requests from internal departments such as claims, loss control, SIU, Policy Issuance and IT as well as external requests from Brokers and Policyholders. (20%)
  4. Presents accounts to management for underwriting approval accompanied by the appropriate underwriting data and recommendations. (10%)
  5. Stays current with rules and regulations, market conditions and corporate underwriting disciplines utilizing NCCI, NAIC, and State Insurance Department websites. (10%)
  6. Assist the marketing department with presentations, proposals and visits and effectively communicates on a regular basis with Agents and Brokers. (5%)
  7. Performs other duties as assigned. (5%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

 Responsible for assisting and training of Underwriting Assistants.

  FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Manage Active Accounts – Maintain a renewal retention rate of a minimum of 80% (excluding cancellation for non- payment of premium). Evaluate all new business opportunities and be aware of the new business goals within the company.

 Plan and Manage - Workflow of assigned accounts utilizing Underwriting Assistant’s.

 Profit - Responsible for the Profit & Loss (Combined Ratio) of assigned accounts.

 Financial Review / Due Diligence - Clear all new and renewal business prior to binding.



Requirements

ANALYSIS, PROBLEM SOLVING, PLANNING:

Analysis - High level - position demands extensive analysis in the underwriting of individual accounts.

 Problem Solving - High level - Must be able to create business opportunities with brokers and clients by understanding their problems and needs and offering viable solutions which are consistent with the company's objectives.

 Planning - High level - Establishment of workflow and service.  Development of service plan and efficient management of accounts.

 EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: (Indicate type and amount, degrees, diplomas, courses of study)

 This position does not require but does prefer College Degree or equivalent experience. Industry designations, such as CPCU or ARM, are encouraged.

 EXPERIENCE AND SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: (Indicate specific types and amount of on-the-job experience and knowledge of company methods, processes and objectives)

 This position requires a minimum of 5-7 years industry experience with a capacity for the underwriting and production of primary workers’ compensation accounts.  The position also requires a working knowledge of large account rating programs including retrospective rating and large deductibles.  People management skills are a must.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Internet software and Microsoft Products such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation.
  • Strong knowledge of rating programs.
